Homework and HOME FOLDER
Student have greater success when their families are involved in their education. Homework provides an opportunity for you to view the kinds of information your student is learning and support them in all areas of learning. Checking your student's Home Folder regularly and Homework Packet each week is an important way to stay connected with their learning.
Mail will come home almost every day in their Home Folder. Please check their Home Folder regularly to make sure you are getting all the school events and activities information.
Each week, on Thursdays, your student will bring home a homework packet in their Home Folder. This packet will be due the following Thursday. Please check through your student's homework. The packet most commonly include a math sheet, a writing activity, a word work/spelling practice, and a reading log. Sometimes instead of the packet we will do a project, which will be sent home instead of homework and be detailed. Below is details of each area of the packet. If your student looses their packet they need to ask for a new one before it is due. There will be extra copies of each packet.
Math: will be review of an area of math we are currently learning
Writing/Language: will include a small prompt or activity surrounding our writing focus or may include grammar review
Word Work/Spelling: will provide various activities to practice our spelling words
Reading Log: a log that students will fill out telling what book they read and for how long. I encourage the students to read 20 minutes or more each night. Ideally there should be five or more log entries.
Projects: will take the place of homework and be centered around a current subject
Homework is not worth a grade in 3rd grade. Instead it is worth DOJO points, which earns students rewards throughout the year. If one page is complete the student gets 1 DOJO point. If 2 pages are complete the student gets 2 DOJO points. If three pages are complete the student gets 3 DOJO points. If 4 pages are complete the student gets 4 DOJO points. If the whole packet is complete and the reading log with five or more day the student gets 2 bonus DOJO points. If a student doesn't turn in a homework packet they loose 3 DOJO points. They have until Monday the following week to get me their homework. If it is turned in after Thursday they cannot get any bonus points. If it is turned in after Monday they loose points unless they were absent during the previous week.
